New gem from the vault! Have a listen below and then check Villa's latest June mix here!
ARTIST: Asha Puthli ALBUM: 1001 Nights Of Love LP RELEASE DATE: 1979 THANG SAYS: Bombay born and raised Asha Puthli is known for funk infused songs like 'Flying Fish' and 'Space Talk', but she also has a soft spot for uptempo arpeggio synthlines - as proven with this delightfull trip that is '1001 Nights Of Love (Reprise)'. It fits seamlessly next to the greats like 'The Chase' and 'Supernature'. The man tweaking the buttons is Rainer Pietsch, who had previously worked with Joy Flemming and later co-wrote with Amanda Lear, so the man knows how to make the disco swing!
I really like where this is going. Villa's recent remixes have been of consistent great quality and so is their latest, for fellow Belgian band Das Pop. Replacing Bent's distinctive vocals is a bold move, but one that didn't miss its goal. Villa's production and vocals by young talent Maya (someone we'll probably hear from in the near future) transform the ultra poppy and upbeat track into one that is much more dark and dancy, yet gives away an explosion of sweetness after the 4 minute mark. Lovely. Das Pop's latest cd 'The Game' is out here and check the latest Villa's Vinyl Vault on ssssound here!
We all know Adele has a very powerfull voice, but Villa did have a significant share in the massive amount of power coming from this remix. Putting the highlights on the best bits of the original, that's really all a remix should do, right? There's a Villa remix of Yeasayer's 'I Remember' coming soon as well, keep an eye out.
After a new ssssoundtrack last week it's time for another beauty from Villa's Vinyl Vault as well. This time Fredo got us an edit by Danny Krivit (also known as Mr. K) from Marvin Gaye's 1976 hit 'I Want You'. This is an edit you don't want to miss!
ARTIST: Marvin Gaye ALBUM: I Want You 12" RELEASE DATE: 2005 FREDO SAYS: I met DJ Harvey in 2005 at RBMA in Seatle, he recommended this particular edit to me so I went to buy it in a record store over there!
The Belgian sky has a hard time deciding whether summer should officially be over or if it can go on for at least the rest of the summer holidays, but judging from this remix the clear skies will stay here for quite a bit longer. Before you start shrieking: "No way! It's Keane! I'm not listening to this", I'll tell you: It's Villa. And it's a dub as well, for that matter. Did you say you wanted .wav? Well, here you go.
While we're at it, have a listen to The Magician's latest Magic Tape on soundcloud and guess the tracklisting. I'll give you one tip: this track is in it.
Luke Million (of The Swiss fame) is working on his solo project and judging from this first track it's something to keep an eye on: lucious, vintage synth sound, plus Arnold kindly instructing you "Come on, more energy!" What more do you need? Out on Future Clasic in September.
Last week, Prince gave away his new album "20TEN" for free, though not as a download on his website - as one would most likely do nowadays in such a case. The only way to get Prince's album was buying certain newspapers that gave the album as a supplement, since Prince is convinced "The internet's completely over". I'm not entirely sure about his promotional qualities, but fact is the man does know a thing or two about making good music - our latest Villa's Vinyl Vault is a clear proof of that.
ARTIST: Prince ALBUM: Sign "O" The Times RELEASE DATE: 1987 FREDO'S ADVICE: "There was a time I didn't play anything else but Prince & Stevie Wonder albums for weeks on end. I cherish those vinyls, 'Sign"O" The Times" being one of them. 'Hot Thing' from that same album is still a regular in our sets."
Your next chance to catch one of those sets is at Avenue L's Villa Night on Wednesday. Avenue L is Ghent's newest coolest place to spend your nights, their parties are not to be missed! Next week they're hosting not one but TWO editions, first one being aforementioned Villa Night on the 20th and a second one, 'Studio Gand' on the 21st, with Studio Brussel's best DJ's on decks. FUN ACT OF THE DAY: I've got 5 pairs of tickets to give away to either of these nights. All you need to do is mail me at ssssound@hotmail.com and tell me which night you want to go to, first ones will get lucky!
And Dorothy Parker: Fredo would love to know which bar you're working at, so if you're reading this: do get in touch! ;-)
After the numerous remixes, Villa is about to drop their first official release. I'm quite sure that's something more than a few people have been looking forward to. With vocals by The New Sins' lovely Lou Hayter and none other than Mickey Moonlight on backings, Villa's take on the Belgian classic 'Beats of Love' today sounds as fresh as Nacht und Nebel's original version must have sounded back in 1983. Hit material, so to speak. Out on Abracada June 28th - keep an eye on this label, lots of exciting new releases coming from this one!
Today I'm very excited to share a new project on ssssound with you: Villa's Vinyl Vault. The idea is simple: every now and then Fredo from Villa will be sharing some of his favourite classics with us - and since he's got nearly a decade of experience in DJing (and thus crate digging), expect to discover lots of vinyl gems. Starting off with the legend that turned 70 this week: Giorgio Moroder. Apart from his work with Donna Summer and classics like 'The Chase' or 'I Wanna Rock You', there's more to be discovered:
Artist: Giorgio Moroder Album: From Here to Eternity (side A) Release date: 1977 Fredo's advice: The A-side of the LP can in fact can be considered as one entire track, with 'Utopia - Me Giorgio' as its highlight.
Music of the moment, Villa are piling up an impressive discography. Their Diva edits on Mindless Boogie, mixing Cosmic Balearic Beats Vol. 2, then remixing The Golden Filter's Thunderbird and now Music Go Music's Warm In The Shadows. Really excited about future things to come (which includes a remix for Ali Love's Smoke & Mirrors i mentioned recently). The nice people over at RCRD LBL got the Music Go Music up for download, so click on the link to get it over there. yum yum
