VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT. VIII

ARTIST: Topo
ALBUM: Ba Ba, Go Go 12"
RELEASE DATE: 1983
THANG SAYS: This record is more electronic than the previous VVV's have been, slightly edgy Italo disco - sometimes also referred to as 'Italectro' by the freaks. An 808 takes care of the groove while the vocals are simple, clean and funny. Most certainly a Clone Records favourite; we miss you...

VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT. VII

New gem from the vault! Have a listen below and then check Villa's latest June mix here!

ARTIST: Asha Puthli
ALBUM: 1001 Nights Of Love LP
RELEASE DATE: 1979
THANG SAYS: Bombay born and raised Asha Puthli is known for funk infused songs like 'Flying Fish' and 'Space Talk', but she also has a soft spot for uptempo arpeggio synthlines - as proven with this delightfull trip that is '1001 Nights Of Love (Reprise)'. It fits seamlessly next to the greats like 'The Chase' and 'Supernature'.
The man tweaking the buttons is Rainer Pietsch, who had previously worked with Joy Flemming and later co-wrote with Amanda Lear, so the man knows how to make the disco swing!

VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT. VI

It's been a while but it's time for another Villa's Vinyl Vault! In case you're just tuning in: in this category Villa share some of their favourite classics with us - vinyl only of course! This time we're in for a classic disco treat, remixed by legend Nile Rodgers.

ARTIST: Sister Sledge, Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards
ALBUM: Lost In Music 12"
RELEASE DATE: 1984
THANG SAYS: This particular track is built around two parts, a classic verse/chorus - verse/chorus, that are each introduced by a buildup - the last one of the two revolving into a repetitive groove that could just go on for hours. Each instrument and vocal is carefully layered on top of each other, forming a timeless harmony.
Several renowed DJ's have remixed this track, e.g. The Glimmers, Larry Levan, Gay Marvine, The Revenge, Dimitri From Paris and of course Nile rodgers and Bernard Edwards featured below. It's impossible to stand still to this song, a perfect ending to a great party!

VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT. V

Yes, there's a new ssssoundtrack coming soon, but up first is a new Villa's Vinyl Vault! The Daft Punk hype will soon be back again (or is it back already?) with the Tron movie coming up, yet Thomas Bangalter's Roulé releases (as well as fellow robot Guy-Manuel de Honem Christo's Crydamoure) still sound as great as ever.

Thomas Bangalter - Club Soda (ALT)

ARTIST: Thomas Bangalter
ALBUM: Trax On Da Rocks Vol. 2
RELEASE DATE: 1998
FREDO SAYS: Roulé reminds me of the good old days when I went digging through vinyls at least once a week at Music Man - a record store in Ghent, up until last year when it closed down - and went to see The Glimmers' mouthwathering sets at the 'Free The Funk' parties and the early days of Culture Club.

VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT.IV

After a new ssssoundtrack last week it's time for another beauty from Villa's Vinyl Vault as well. This time Fredo got us an edit by Danny Krivit (also known as Mr. K) from Marvin Gaye's 1976 hit 'I Want You'. This is an edit you don't want to miss!

Marvin Gaye - I Want You (Breakdown Edit By Mr. K) (ALT)

ARTIST: Marvin Gaye
ALBUM: I Want You 12"
RELEASE DATE: 2005
FREDO SAYS: I met DJ Harvey in 2005 at RBMA in Seatle, he recommended this particular edit to me so I went to buy it in a record store over there!

VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT.III & AVENUE L

Last week, Prince gave away his new album "20TEN" for free, though not as a download on his website - as one would most likely do nowadays in such a case. The only way to get Prince's album was buying certain newspapers that gave the album as a supplement, since Prince is convinced "The internet's completely over". I'm not entirely sure about his promotional qualities, but fact is the man does know a thing or two about making good music - our latest Villa's Vinyl Vault is a clear proof of that.

Prince - The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (ALT)

ARTIST: Prince
ALBUM: Sign "O" The Times
RELEASE DATE: 1987
FREDO'S ADVICE: "There was a time I didn't play anything else but Prince & Stevie Wonder albums for weeks on end. I cherish those vinyls, 'Sign"O" The Times" being one of them. 'Hot Thing' from that same album is still a regular in our sets."

Your next chance to catch one of those sets is at Avenue L's Villa Night on Wednesday. Avenue L is Ghent's newest coolest place to spend your nights, their parties are not to be missed! Next week they're hosting not one but TWO editions, first one being aforementioned Villa Night on the 20th and a second one, 'Studio Gand' on the 21st, with Studio Brussel's best DJ's on decks.
FUN ACT OF THE DAY: I've got 5 pairs of tickets to give away to either of these nights. All you need to do is mail me at ssssound@hotmail.com and tell me which night you want to go to, first ones will get lucky!

And Dorothy Parker: Fredo would love to know which bar you're working at, so if you're reading this: do get in touch! ;-)

VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT.II

Contrarily to what his latest album title 'I'm New Here' might state, Gil Scott-Heron's music has probably been around much longer than a lot of you have been walking this planet (that includes me). The album is a real beauty, so if you haven't heard it yet, this treasure from Villa's Vinyl Vault is just one more reason to check out Gil's entire discography. Go!

Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle (ALT)

Artist: Gil Scott-Heron
Album: The Bottle (maxi)
Release date: 1974
Fredo's advice: To me, 'I'm New Here' has got a good shot at being the record of the year, fantastic comeback album. The Bottle was one of the first maxis I got, it was an introduction to the loft classics.

PS - Look out for SSSSOUDNTRACK PT. VII, coming soon!

VILLA'S VINYL VAULT PT.I

Today I'm very excited to share a new project on ssssound with you: Villa's Vinyl Vault. The idea is simple: every now and then Fredo from Villa will be sharing some of his favourite classics with us - and since he's got nearly a decade of experience in DJing (and thus crate digging), expect to discover lots of vinyl gems.
Starting off with the legend that turned 70 this week: Giorgio Moroder.
Apart from his work with Donna Summer and classics like 'The Chase' or 'I Wanna Rock You', there's more to be discovered:

Giorgo Moroder - Utopia - Me Giorgio (ALT)

Artist: Giorgio Moroder
Album: From Here to Eternity (side A)
Release date: 1977
Fredo's advice: The A-side of the LP can in fact can be considered as one entire track, with 'Utopia - Me Giorgio' as its highlight.
